2009-10 High School Youth Jazz

  • Auditions for the 2009-10 TJWY High School Band will be held December 16 and 17, 2009.
  • Audition times are 6:30 PM -8:00 PM. Auditions are open for both nights for all instruments.
  • All auditions will be held in the Garvey Building at Washburn University:
    Trumpets: Room 312
    Trombones: Room 311
    Saxes & Rhythm Section: Room 134 (band room behind White Concert Hall)
  • Audition material will consist of:
    - Prepared music (2009 NE Dist. jazz audition music is preferred, or music from your high school jazz band
    that demonstrates your abilities).
    - Chromatic Scale on the full range of your instrument (brass, as high/low as comfortable)
    - 1 Major Scale (chosen from C,F, Bb, Eb, G, D, A)
    - Sight Reading
    - Optional Improvisation
    (Accompaniment CD for "Four" and standard concert F blues will be available)
  • The Winter Session for 2009 will begin with the first rehearsal on January 7 at 7:00 PM in the Washburn University Band Room. Please be there no later than 7:00 PM, since downbeat will be promptly at 7:10 PM and we will need to tune up.
  • Rehearsal Dates: January 7, 14, 21, 28 and February 4, 11
  • All enrollment forms and $40 fee are due at the first rehearsal.
  • The session will culminate in a concert on February 13th at 3:00 PM in Washburn University's White Concert Hall. Dress is nice casual such as Dockers and a button shirt (no jeans or T-shirts, please).
  • Missed rehearsals are strongly discouraged, and are excused only for significant illness or family emergencies. Please notify the director in advance if you know of a conflict.

Participants in this session may be recommended for tuition scholarships to the Summer Jazz Camps at KU and elsewhere, each worth up to $350.00.
Scholarships are offered by Topeka Jazz Workshop, Inc.
Scholarships winners will be announced at the Winter session concert.
